Undergraduate Mentoring Program
Department of Geography has established a voluntary mentoring program for all undergraduate geography/giscience majors at MSU. The purpose of the program is to enhance the student's adacemic experience through informal, one-on-one discussions between faculty and students. Faculty wil meet with students 3-4 times during each semester, discussions can be open-ended and wide-ranging or can focus on such specific topics as:
- career goals and plans
- improving oral and written communication skills
- employment opportunities
- graduate programs
- preparation of resumes
- membership in professional associations
- interviewing techniques
- themes, trends, and opportunities in geography
The purpose of these discussions is three-fold, the student may (1) grow academically, (2) gain a better understanding of the geography profession, (3) become better prepared for life after MSU. In addition, professors will gain a better understanding of students.
Mentoring is not the same as academic advising. Geography majors continue to consult with the departmental advisor on programs and courses. The advisor will refer students to faculty for mentoring based on interest area and availability. If you are interested in mentoring opportunities, please contact the undergraduate advisor for more information.
