Requirements of the College of Social Science
Requirements in effect as of Summer 2005. If you became a major in Geography or Geographic Information Science before Summer 2005, your requirements may be different, consult with the departmental academic advisor.
To ensure an appropriately broad and well-balanced education, all undergraduates enrolled in the College of Social Science must satisfy the following subject matter and credit distribution requirements, in addition to the graduation requirements of the University.
The following restrictions pertain to all courses taken in fulfillment of requirements for a Bachelor of Arts or a Bachelor of Science degree in the College of Social Science:
- Courses applied to the University requirements in Integrative Studies and Mathematics may not also be counted toward the college graduation requirements;
- Not more than 4 credits of independent study, internship, field experience, or practicum courses may be used to fulfill the college requirements for the Bachelor of Arts and Bachelor Science degree;
- No course offered by the Geography Department may be counted toward the college requirements for Geography and GIScience majors;
- Only credits graded on the numerical or Pass-No Pass grade system may be counted toward College or major requirements, i.e., courses taken in satisfaction of College and major requirements may not be taken on a Credit-No Credit basis.
Distribution Requirements (all majors)
- Complete the requirements of the major with a minimum 2.0 grade-point average for courses in the major and a minimum 2.0 grade-point average for all courses taken at the university.
- Complete a minimum of 30 credits in courses numbered at the 300 level and above. Courses offered by the Geography department may be used to satisfy this requirement.
- A maximum of 12 credits of independent study may be applied to the degree.
- A maximum of 12 credits of internship, field experience, or practicum credits may be applied to the degree.
- The total of indepenent study, internship, field experience, and practicum credits applied to the degree may not exceed 20 credits.

Requirements for the Bachelor of Arts degree in Geography
Social Science Requirement
- Complete a minimum of 15 credits in the following departments, schools, and programs: Anthropology, Criminal Justice, Economics, Family and Child Ecology, History, Labor and Industrial Relations, Political Science, Psychology, Social Work, Sociology, and Urban and Regional Planning. A maximum of 4 credits of Social Science 493 or 496 may apply.
- ANP 202 may be applied to either the social science requirement or the natural science requirement, but not both.
Arts and Letters Requirement
- Complete a minimum of 9 credits in the College of Arts and Letters.
- Courses which meet this requirement may come from these departments.
Natural Science Requirement
- Complete a minimum of 6 credits in the College of Natural Science. ANP 202 is an approved natural science course.
- MTH 1825, MTH 100E, and MTH 290 may not be used to satisfy this requirement.
- LSB 133, 246, 290, 330, 331, 332, 333, 334, 335, 336, 355, 368, 425, 470, 483, 490, 492, 493 may not be used to satisfy this requirement.

Social Science Requirement
- Complete a minimum of 9 credits in the following departments, schools, and programs: Anthropology, Criminal Justice, Economics, Family and Child Ecology, History, Labor and Industrial Relations, Political Science, Psychology, Social Work, Sociology, and Urban and Regional Planning. A maximum of 4 credits of Social Science 493 or 496 may apply.

- MTH 124 Survey of Calculus I, 3 credits, or MTH 132 Calculus I, 3 credits. If not used to complete the University Mathematics Requirement.
- MTH 126 Survey of Calculus II, 3 credits, I or MTH 133 Calculus II, 4 credits
- CSE 131Technical Computing and Problem Solving, 3 credits
- CSE 231 Introduction to Programming I, 4 credits
- MTH 1825, MTH 100E, MTH 103, MTH 103E, and MTH 290 may not be used to satisfy this requirement.
- LSB 133, 246, 290, 330, 331, 332, 333, 334, 335, 336, 355, 368, 425, 470, 483, 490, 492, 493 may not be used to satisfy this requirement.
