Requirements for Graduation Established
by Michigan State University
Requirements established for baccalaureate degrees granted by Michigan State University are listed in the Undergraduate Education section of the University Catalog. A summary of those requirements is provided below, however, the University Academic Programs Catalog is the official policy of the University. Each student is individually responsible for being aware of, and for meeting, graduation requirements.
To be recommended for a bachelor's degree, a student must:
- Complete a minimum of 120 credits with at least a 2.00 grade point average.
- Remove any deficiencies identified by MSU placement test scores.
- Complete at least 20 credits while enrolled as a Geography major.
- Complete at least 27 credits on the East Lansing campus after reaching junior standing.
- Complete one year's work, normally the year of graduation, earning at least 30 credits in courses given by Michigan State University.
In addition, each student must complete the following:
Writing Requirement
- One 4-credit Tier I writing course (WRA) during the first year or
- The developmental writing courses (WRA 0102 and 1004) and one 4-credit Tier I writing course during the first year,
and
- The Tier II writing requirement (Geography 480, Senior Seminar)
Mathematics Requirement
- Obtain a score on a proctored MSU mathematics placement test which results in placement into MTH 132 (calculus)
- Or, complete, or transfer, the equivalent of either:
- One of the following courses: MTH 110, MTH 112, MTH 116, MTH 124, MTH 132, MTH 152H, MTH 201, STT 200, STT201
- Both of the following courses: MTH 103 and MTH 114
Integrative Studies Requirements
- Arts and Humanities (8 credits): one IAH course numbered below 211 and one IAH course numbered 211 or higher.
- Social, Behaviorial, and Economic Sciences (ISS) (8 credits): one 200-level course and one 300-level course.
- General Science (8 credits): 3 credits in Biological Sciences (ISB), 3 credits in Physical Sciences (ISP),plus a 2 credit laboratory taken concurrently with one of the courses.
