Steven B. Smiley is an energy economist and wind energy expert with 20 years of practical experience in energy efficiency, wind and solar applications. Mr. Smiley has been involved in all aspects of residential and commercial wind energy including project development, wind resource assessment, home power wind systems, and commercial wind applications. In 1996 he assisted Traverse City Light and Power in developing and implementing the green rate wind project; the first program of its type in the United States. This project was the first commercial wind turbine installed in Michigan and for a time, the largest in the U.S. He has been representing the Union of Concerned Scientists as a member of the "Green Group." Mr. Smiley received his Master of Arts degree in Geography and Economics from Central Michigan University. His postgraduate work was conducted in environmental and energy economics at the University of Calgary, Alberta, Canada. He has worked extensively in the renewable energy field both in the U.S. and internationally. His family residence has been independently electric powered from wind and solar for thirteen years. Recently, Mr. Smiley has been working on expanding commercial wind power for Michigan in conjunction with a new company, Bay Windpower, LLC. He has also been working on the Mackinaw City Wind Project and with the Little River Band of Ottawa Indians. |
